This prime corner in Chinatown has been home to several restaurants throughout the years, notably Jade Palace in the 60s and Soluxe Restaurant following that. In the 1960s, the most notable commercial buildings were restaurants. New one- and two-storey structures were built, and existing buildings were also adapted to create attractive dining and entertainment destinations. They drew attention with exuberant, projecting rooftop or wall signs with Chinese characters and typefaces resembling calligraphy, and traditional imagery.

When reinterpreting the space, we looked at the Xiantiandi Shopping Centre for inspiration, a trendy area in the heart of Shanghai. It is well-known for its unique blend of historic and modern elements, which we wanted to bring to Calgary.

This landmark building on Chinatown's most prominent corner radiates a unique vibrancy and charm. It attracts a diverse crowd: professionals grabbing a quick bite, seniors enjoying friendly meetups, and students hanging out. With high daily lunch and dinner traffic, this prime location is well-positioned to capitalize on the area’s dynamic energy.

Introducing a New Generation

With renewed interest in the city’s Chinatown from young Calgarians, this iconic corner deserves a unique concept. This would be an Ideal location for a Chinese Brasserie, a Bao spot, or the Calgary’s new favourite Ramen and Sushi.

Professionals and patrons of all ages regularly travel to Calgary’s Chinatown and Downtown Core, making this prominent corner an ideal location for any well-operated restaurant. The lower level provides a unique opportunity for a luxurious underground bar - a concept like this would optimize the affluent and wide trade area that this corner has during the evenings and weekends.
